Indricotherium
In mid-Tertiary time (about 25 million years ago), Asia was occupied
by huge mammals that would appear strange to us today. They included
Indricotherium,
a gigantic hornless relative of the rhinoceros, and the largest and heaviest
land mammal known.
Its massive body, more than 8 m long, 5.6 m high, and weighing approximately
15.5 metric tons, was supported by pillar-like, three-toed limbs, and was
topped by a long neck and head. It was a tree-top browser much like the giraffe.
Remains
of this extraordinary mammal have been found in China and Mongolia.
